Supreme Court Appears Willing to Weaken the Voting Rights Act
In an October 2025 hearing, the Supreme Court’s conservative majority appeared open to curbing Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which prevents states from drawing election maps that dilute the voting power of Black and minority communities.
Civil-rights groups warn that weakening this protection could dramatically shift political representation—especially in southern states such as Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama.
“This would take us back decades,” said civil-rights attorney Sherrilyn Ifill. “Section 2 is one of the last tools we have to ensure fair representation for Black and brown voters.”

Campus Flashpoint at Tennessee State University Raises Concerns for HBCU Safety & DEI Programs
On September 23, 2025, a surprise protest by a conservative group at Tennessee State University (TSU)—a historically Black college in Nashville—sparked national discussion about campus safety and the future of DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) programs.
Students and faculty quickly organized a peaceful counterresponse, calling for stronger protections against politically motivated intimidation and reaffirming TSU’s commitment to inclusivity.

DOJ Settlement in East Tennessee School District Following Racial Harassment Investigation
The U.S. Department of Justice has reached a settlement with an East Tennessee school district following repeated racial harassment—including a mock “slave auction” involving Black students.
The district must now create a discrimination-reporting portal, train all staff on civil-rights compliance, and strengthen disciplinary policies.
